What Actually Works Against an Attacking Dog

Dog attacks follow a pattern: barking and posturing, then a fast charge with little warning. Your defense needs to work at two stages — before contact and during it. No single product covers both perfectly, which is why understanding each option matters.

How to Use a Stun Gun Against a Dog

Timing and positioning matter. Here’s what to know before you need it:

Create distance first if possible. Your spray or ultrasonic repeller should be your first move. Use them before the dog closes to within arm’s reach. A 12-foot head start gives you options a stun gun cannot.

If the dog is already close, aim for the body. The sides, hindquarters, or neck are the most effective contact points. You do not need a prolonged contact — a brief touch activates the deterrent effect. Hold the stun gun firmly so it isn’t knocked from your hand.

Keep your stun gun in an accessible position. Clipped to a belt, in a side pocket, or in a holster — not zipped into a bag. The Runt includes a nylon holster and disable pin wrist strap. If the stun gun is snatched from your hand, the wrist strap disconnects the pin and disables the device.

Is It Legal to Use a Stun Gun Against a Dog?

In the vast majority of U.S. states, using a stun gun in self-defense against an attacking animal is legal. The relevant question is usually whether stun guns are legal to own and carry in your state — and in most states, they are for adults.

A handful of states have restrictions worth checking: Hawaii prohibits stun guns entirely. Rhode Island has ownership restrictions.
